Circular Amersfoort: Urban mining potential in the built environment
Analysis of the urban mining potential in the built environment of Amersfoort
An analysis of material flows in Amersfoort, to help inform the municipality of Amersfoort’s ambition to close building material cycles in its built environment.
- Client: Gemeente Amersfoort
- Partners: SGS Search, KplusV
- Date: November 2017
In 2010 the Netherlands generated over 22 million tons of construction and demolition waste (CE Delft, 2014). The municipality of Amersfoort aims to be completely waste-free by 2050, and has prioritized identifying circular opportunities in construction, reducing both waste from demolition and demand for new building materials. To do so, it is essential to understand the material flows in Amersfoort.
Together with SGS Search, Metabolic undertook analysis of information provided by the municipality of Amersfoort, which had detailed data on the construction, renovation and demolition tasks for the coming years, detailed to a specific location and time. Using analyzes of the material types and intensity of different projects, this data was translated into building material and BSA flows, in order to identify circular opportunities.
Metabolic and SGS Search created a model that predicts the available and required material flows that will result from the planned demolition, transformation and renovation projects in the municipality. These material flows were indicated for a specific year and neighborhood, which allowed for identifying matches between demand and supply, spelling out the potential for urban mining and subsequent reuse. The temporal and spatial scope of the material flows allowed for the indication of the optimal location for material hubs to facilitate urban mining and reuse of secondary materials.
