Metabolic at COP16 2024
Join us at COP16 as we lead discussions on our dependence on nature, ecosystem restoration, financing nature-positive solutions, science-based targets for cities, collaborative funding approaches, and regenerative agriculture. We look forward to seeing you there!
We depend on nature
As the global community comes together for the first Biodiversity COP since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at COP15, the focus must shift from simply mitigating impacts to understanding our reliance on nature and taking action to restore ecosystems. Metabolic believes real progress happens when organizations and governments map these dependencies systemically. Our software tool, LINK, has been helping companies undertake this difficult task. LINK helps identify where nature is most impacted and suggests the most effective actions to take. At the local level, stimulating action often requires a place-based transition approach to mobilize blended finance and empower noncompetitive collaboration between key actors. In April we published the Playbook for Place-Based Transition Funds and are currently orchestrating urban and rural place-based initiatives to further this work.
At COP16, our primary goal is to show that we need to consider both our dependencies on nature and our impacts on it to make the global economy truly sustainable.

New report launching at COP16
On Monday, October 28th, in the For Coral Pavilion, there will be a public launch of a new report that assesses global progress toward protecting 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030, a critical commitment under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Metabolic, in collaboration with Bloomberg Philanthropies Ocean Initiative, Campaign for Nature, Marine Conservation Institute, and SkyTruth, partnered to produce this report providing insights into current ocean conservation efforts and outlining five key recommendations to accelerate government action.
As highlighted by former US Secretary of State John Kerry and former Costa Rican President José María Figueres in the report’s foreword:
“Protecting and conserving at least 30% of the world’s ocean is vital to safeguard marine biodiversity and the billions of people who depend on it for their livelihoods and food security. It is also essential to preserving the ocean’s ability to act as our greatest climate ally by absorbing billions of tonnes of carbon emissions every year.”
Please reach out to our delegates to explore opportunities to connect or collaborate. We look forward to partnering with those ready to protect and restore the natural environments on which we depend.
‘At COP16 I am looking forward to meeting everyone driving real change right now—whether through innovative finance models for regenerative agriculture or ambitious strategies to shift businesses toward nature-positive practices. This is fast becoming the largest gathering yet of organizations, leaders, and newcomers dedicated to restoring ecosystems and reversing biodiversity loss. We are going to Cali to bring our systems thinking expertise and help accelerate these efforts, ensuring that actions taken here have a lasting impact on the health of our planet.’
